[11 Jun 2010 | Comments Off on Letter to the Editor of the Ottawa Citizen Regarding the “Haters’ Test” | ]

In response to the Ottawa Citizen’s attack on NDP MP Libby Davies
By Hanna Kawas
The Ottawa Citizen “Haters’ test” http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Haters+test/3139300/story.html, published June 11, 2010 is misleading, lacking in historic facts and crudely apologizes for Israeli occupation and discrimination. I am going to burden you with some documentation and references the Ottawa Citizen editors did not want to bother with.
Before 1948, there was no state of Israel. It came about as many historians (Jewish and otherwise) have now recognized – on the tragedy of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine from its indigenous …

[24 May 2010 | Comments Off on Boycott MEC Now | ]

This Business Does NOT Advance Human Rights!!
Boycott MEC Now
A year and a half ago, it was discovered that Mountain Equipment Coop, headquartered in Vancouver, was carrying Israeli products and even partnering with an Israeli company, Source Vagabond, that brags of its connections with the Israeli military. Concerned activists across Canada tried in vain to convince both MEC leadership and those attending the 2009 Annual General Meeting to stop carrying these offensive products. There were meetings with the CEO and other officers, letters and emails, and a vibrant campaign around a …

By Hanna Kawas
RE: Whose Interests are you Serving?
The following open response was sent to Manitoba MLA Heather Stefanson on April 14, 2010, answering her form email sent to those concerned about her motion “Denouncing Israeli Apartheid Week.”
Open Response to Manitoba MLA Heather Stefanson:
I just received the email, sent on your behalf, regarding the “debate” you say you are interested in having in the Manitoba Legislature. A reasonable and informed debate, you further state. However, given your statement (1) last month when this issue first came up, we seriously question …

[12 Apr 2010 | Comments Off on Whose Interests are you Serving? | ]

By Hanna Kawas. The following message was sent on April 12, 2010 to Manitoba MLA’s regarding a motion condemning Israeli Apartheid Week, to be debated on Thursday Apr. 15th, 2010.
Dear MLA:
It has come to our attention that a private members motion is expected to be introduced in the Manitoba Legislature later this week. This motion will reportedly call for censoring a student activity on campuses called Israel Apartheid Week, and is an attempt to use political office to stifle legitimate debate and criticism of Israeli government policies. A similar motion …

[15 Mar 2010 | Comments Off on Easter Appeal to Ms. Cheri DiNovo, Ontario MPP and United Church Minister | ]

By Hanna Kawas.
Let Palestinian Christians Worship this Easter with No Apartheid Passes
I have followed with dismay the role you played, perhaps unwittingly, in the destructive Ontario Legislature motion on Feb. 25, 2010 regarding Israeli Apartheid Week. You were quoted in the Star as saying that the word apartheid is “inflammatory” and ”used inappropriately in the case of Israel”, and that “Apartheid does not help the discussion”. http://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/article/771761–mpps-decry-linking-israel-to-apartheid.
It was painful to hear these words from a NDP legislator and especially after we knew you are also a United Church Minister.
Last August, …

[11 Mar 2010 | Comments Off on Open Reply to Mr. Shurman, Ontario MPP, Regarding “O Canada or O Israel?” | ]

By Hanna Kawas. The following letter was sent to Ontario MPP Peter Shurman (Thornhill), in response to his reply to O Canada or O Israel?
Open Reply to Mr. Shurman, Ontario MPP
I appreciate your courtesy in answering my letter “Is It O Canada or O Israel?”, but I am baffled by your response and your logic. If you are truly concerned for your constituents, you will not hide the truth from them.
Regrettably, as in the debates around your original motion in the Ontario Legislature, you did not substantiate any of your …

[27 Feb 2010 | Comments Off on O Canada or O Israel? | ]

By Hanna Kawas. The following open letter was sent to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario MPPs under the title: Is It “O Canada” or “O Israel”?.
Open Letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty and Ontario MPPs
We learned with concern about the unanimous passing of a motion in the Ontario legislature (30/107 MPPs in attendance) introduced by Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman (Thornhill) on Feb. 25, 2010 to condemn the annual Israel Apartheid Week.
Mr. Shurman was quoted as saying that he wants “the name changed. It’s just wrong” and that …

Boycott Cactus Club

Don’t Drink with Apartheid, It’ll Surely Ruin your Appetite!

Cactus Club, a chain of restaurants in Western Canada, is carrying one of the Galil wines labelled from Israel on its wine list. Despite several attempts to engage with their management on this issue (see letter below), they have not even acknowledged receiving our messages; rather, they have chosen to ignore the human rights principles at stake. We must let Cactus Club know that many of its customers find this offensive and that it will affect our decision to patronize their restaurants.

[25 Dec 2009 | Comments Off on Christmas Message 2009 – To the Canadian People | ]

From a Bethlehemite
Successive Canadian governments have supported the Zionist project, the creation and maintenance of the state of Israel, and the accompanying military expansion and trampling of Palestinian human and national rights. In 1947 Canadian representatives played a major role in formulating and passing the UN Partition Plan for Palestine [Resolution 181 (II)]. Lester B. Pearson, then the Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs, was instrumental in ensuring the passage of the Partition Resolution and Supreme Court of Canada Justice, Ivan C. Rand, was a central figure in drafting …
